Game Summary |
The Patriots outlasted St. Raphael's, 1 - 0,
to advance to the RIIL Division I Region 1 Finals. Ryan
Westmoreland picked up the win, pitching two-hit, shutout
baseball over seven innings of work. He walked one, hit a
batter, and struck out eleven. Offensively, the Patriots' bats
were silent all day long. However, Portsmouth managed to score a
run in the 1st inning. After a leadoff walk to Ryan
Westmoreland, Adam Reece grounded into a fielder's choice to
retire Westmoreland. John Sleeper followed with a walk. Then,
St. Raphael's relief pitcher, Chris Hall, was called for a balk,
putting runners at second and third. St. Ray's starter, Jeremy
Thurber, then returned to the mound and intentionally walked
John Pedrotty before giving up a sacrifice fly to Matt
Billington to plate the Pats' only run of the afternoon. Both
teams threatened throughout the game, but neither was able to
push a run across. The Patriots' "March to McCoy" will resume on
Tuesday, when they will meet the winner of the Chariho/St.
Raphael's game. The game will be at Pierce Memorial Field in
East Providence, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 PM. If the
Patriots win, they will advance to the RIIL Final Four. If the
Patriots lose, a final, "winner take all" game would be
scheduled for Thursday June 14. |
